לומדי כאן: התחושה של הצורה הזאת היא "כבר הייתי בתוך זה הרבה זמן כשקרה משהו". זו בדיוק התמונה שהתוכנית מתארת. גם כאן, תלמידי 3 יח"ל לא נדרשים לנושא. מי שלומד ל-4 או 5 יח"ל צריך להכיר צורה אחת בלבד, ולכן כדאי לתרגל אותה על כמה משפטים עד שהיא נשמעת טבעית. החבילה שהגיעה אחרי שבועות היא דוגמה שקל לזכור.

מי צריך את הנושא הזה

Past perfect continuous נדרש ב-4 ו-5 יח"ל. ברמת 3 יח"ל התוכנית כותבת NO DESCRIPTOR. בתוכנית יש לנושא סעיף אחד בלבד, ולכן השיעור הזה צר וממוקד.

הצורה

הצורה בנויה מ-had been ואחריהם פועל עם ing: I had been waiting, she had been working. הצורה זהה לכל הנושאים. בקיצור: I'd been waiting. אפשר לזהות אותה לפי השילוב had been + ing.

רקע שנמשך עד האירוע המרכזי

התוכנית מגדירה את השימוש כך: פעולה או אירוע ברקע שהתחילו לפני נקודה בעבר, והמשיכו עד שקרה האירוע המרכזי. הדוגמה: I ordered a new suit online two months ago. I'd been waiting for the parcel for weeks and was relieved when it finally arrived. ההמתנה התחילה לפני ההגעה, נמשכה שבועות, והסתיימה כשהחבילה הגיעה. האירוע המרכזי (was relieved, arrived) ב-Past simple, והרקע שנמשך ב-Past perfect continuous.

איך מזהים מתי להשתמש בו

שואלים שלוש שאלות. האם יש אירוע מרכזי בעבר? האם היה משהו שהתחיל קודם ונמשך עד אליו? האם חשוב להדגיש את משך הזמן או את התהליך? אם כן, אפשר להשתמש ב-had been + ing, לרוב עם for או since: He had been working for six hours when the power went out.

טעויות נפוצות

טעות ראשונה: לשכוח את been ולכתוב had waiting. הצורה המלאה היא had been waiting. טעות שנייה: להשתמש ב-have been במקום ב-had been כשהסיפור בעבר. אם האירוע המרכזי ב-Past simple, גם הרקע שקדם לו צריך לעבור לעבר: had been. טעות שלישית: לשים את האירוע המרכזי עצמו ב-Past perfect continuous. האירוע המרכזי הוא הנקודה בזמן שאליה נמשך הרקע, ולכן הוא ב-Past simple. אם רוצים לדעת מי הרקע ומי האירוע, שואלים: מה כבר היה בעיצומו, ומה קרה אז?
