לומדי כאן: Past continuous הוא הרקע של הסיפור. הוא אומר מה היה באמצע כשקרה משהו אחר, ו-Past simple אומר מה קרה. אם אתם לא בטוחים, צרו תמונה בראש: Past continuous הוא סרט שרץ ברקע, ו-Past simple הוא תמונה אחת שנכנסת אליו. כך קל להחליט איזה פועל בצורה אחת ואיזה בצורה השנייה, גם כשיש במשפט שני פעלים.

הצורה ופעולה שהייתה באמצע

Past continuous בנוי מ-was או were ואחריהם פועל עם ing. בשלילה: wasn't, weren't. משתמשים בו לפעולה או מצב שהיו באמצע סביב זמן מסוים בעבר, בחיוב ובשלילה. דוגמה מהתוכנית: I went to the football championship last Sunday when my team was participating in it. הקבוצה הייתה באמצע ההשתתפות בשעה שהגעתי.

פעולות מקבילות ואירוע רקע

כשיש שתי פעולות שקרו באותו זמן, כל אחת מהן יכולה להיות ב-Past continuous. דוגמה מהתוכנית: Joseph explained that while he was working in the laboratory, Harry was collecting samples of soil. while מחבר שתי פעולות שנמשכו יחד. הצורה משמשת גם לתיאור רקע לאירוע המרכזי: while the soldiers were preparing the campsite, the commander made plans for the battle. ההכנות הן הרקע, וההחלטה של המפקד היא האירוע המרכזי, והוא ב-Past simple. כל הסעיפים האלה נדרשים בשלוש הרמות.

סיבה ופעולות חוזרות

אפשר להשתמש ב-Past continuous כדי לתת סיבה למשהו, לרוב עם because. דוגמה: Yesterday, the Minister of Education came to our school because we were holding a national debate competition. זה נדרש בכל הרמות. ברמות 4 ו-5 יח"ל נדרש גם שימוש לפעולות שחזרו בעבר, לרוב עם always. ברמת 3 יח"ל כתוב NO DESCRIPTOR. הדוגמה: He was always talking about winning the prize, but I never thought he would succeed.

שאלות

שאלת yes/no מתחילה ב-was או were: Were you practicing for the dance performance? ועונים Yes, I was. שאלת Wh כוללת מילת שאלה לפני was/were: Who were you playing chess with? What was happening there? וכך גם שאלה על אירוע רקע: Why were they working around the clock prior to the strike? הסדר: מילת שאלה, was/were, נושא, פועל עם ing. השאלות נדרשות בכל שלוש הרמות.

Past continuous מול Past simple

הצורה של Past simple מספרת על אירוע שקרה והסתיים. הצורה של Past continuous מספרת מה היה באמצע. משפט אחד יכול להכיל את שניהם: I was walking to school when it began to rain. ההליכה היא הרקע (was walking), והגשם הוא האירוע (began). אם אומרים I walked to school, מבינים שהגעתי ליעד, ובמשפט הראשון ההליכה נקטעה. בדיקה קצרה לפני שבוחרים: האם הפעולה הייתה באמצע, או שהיא נגמרה? אם הייתה באמצע, בוחרים Past continuous. הסעיפים של הסיבה, של אירוע הרקע ושל השאלות נדרשים בכל שלוש הרמות, ורק הפעולות החוזרות עם always מיועדות ל-4 ו-5 יח"ל.

דוגמאות פתורות

Complete: While I ___ (study), my brother ___ (play) music.

  1. שתי פעולות שנמשכו באותו זמן, עם while.
  2. I: was studying. my brother: was playing.

תשובה: While I was studying, my brother was playing music.

Complete: The soldiers ___ (prepare) the campsite when the commander ___ (make) plans.

  1. ההכנות הן הרקע ונמשכו, ולכן was/were + ing: were preparing.
  2. ההחלטה היא האירוע המרכזי, ולכן Past simple: made.

תשובה: The soldiers were preparing the campsite when the commander made plans.

Write a question: ask a friend if she was practicing for the performance yesterday afternoon.

  1. שאלת yes/no ב-Past continuous.
  2. she ביחיד, ולכן Was בתחילת המשפט.

תשובה: Was she practicing for the performance yesterday afternoon?

Write a Wh-question: What / the police / do / near the mall.

  1. שאלת Wh על פעולה שנמשכה.
  2. the police מתייחס כרבים: were doing.

תשובה: What were the police doing near the mall?

  1. הרקע הוא Past continuous, והאירוע המרכזי הוא Past simple.
  2. דוגמה לתשובה: I was walking to school when it began to rain.

8. A 4-5 point task: write a sentence about a friend who always talked about his plans. Use the Past continuous with always.שאלה בהקשר
  1. פעולה חוזרת בעבר: was + always + ing.

  • Past continuous: was/were + ing, ובשלילה wasn't / weren't.
  • פעולה שהייתה באמצע, פעולות מקבילות עם while ואירוע רקע (3/4/5 יח"ל).
  • סיבה עם because (3/4/5), פעולות חוזרות עם always (4/5 בלבד).
  • שאלות yes/no: Were you practicing...? שאלות Wh: Who were you playing chess with?
