לומדי כאן: "had" בצד של ה-if ו-"would have" בצד של התוצאה. שניהם בעבר העמוק, כי מדובר בדבר שכבר קרה ואי אפשר לשנות.

לדמיין עבר אחר

תנאי שלישי (third conditional) מדבר על העבר שכבר אי אפשר לשנות: מה היה קורה אילו משהו אחר היה קורה. הוא נלמד ברמות 4 ו-5 יחידות. ברמת 3 יחידות אין לו תיאור. התבנית: If + Past perfect, would have + past participle. הדוגמה מהתוכנית: [Thanks for leaving the note.] If you hadn't left the message, I wouldn't have known where you were. בפועל השארת הודעה, ולכן ידעתי.

Past perfect בפסוקית ה-if

Past perfect בנוי מ-had + past participle: had left, had known, had studied. בשלילה: hadn't left. בתוכנית כתוב -ed, אבל בפועלים לא רגילים משתמשים בצורת ה-past participle שלהם. בדוגמה של התוכנית known הוא ה-participle של know. דוגמה משלנו: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the test. פסוקית ה-if מתארת מה לא קרה או מה כן קרה, ומתייחסת לעבר.

would have + past participle בתוצאה

בפסוקית התוצאה משתמשים ב-would have ואחריו past participle: would have passed, would have known. בשלילה: wouldn't have known. התוצאה מתארת מה היה קורה בעבר אילו התנאי התקיים. דוגמאות משלנו: If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train. If she hadn't been ill, she would have come to the party. שימו לב שגם ב-if וגם בתוצאה אין אפשרות לשנות את העבר, ולכן המשפט הוא משאלה או חרטה, לא תחזית.

חרטה ותוצאה אחרת

התוכנית אומרת שמשתמשים בתנאי שלישי כדי לדמיין עבר אחר שבו משהו קרה או לא קרה, או כדי לדמיין תוצאה אחרת, לעתים מתוך חרטה. הדוגמה של ההודעה מראה תוצאה (לא הייתי יודע). דוגמה לחרטה: If I had listened to my teacher, I would have done better. המשפט אומר שלא הקשבתי ולא הצלחתי כמו שרציתי. הבדל מהתנאי השני: בשני מדובר בהווה או בעתיד הדמיוניים (If I had time, I would learn), ובשלישי מדובר בעבר (If I had had time, I would have learned).

בדיקה לפני שכותבים

בודקים שלושה דברים. הראשון: פסוקית ה-if ב-had + past participle. השני: התוצאה ב-would have + past participle. השלישי: אין would בפסוקית ה-if. השגוי: If you would have left the message. הנכון: If you had left the message. השגוי: If I would have known, I would have told you. הנכון: If I had known, I would have told you. אם הסדר מתהפך, אין פסיק: I would have told you if I had known.

דוגמאות פתורות

Complete: If you ___ (not leave) the message, I ___ (not know) where you were.

  1. פסוקית ה-if ב-Past perfect שלילי: hadn't left.
  2. התוצאה: wouldn't have known (known הוא ה-participle של know).

תשובה: If you hadn't left the message, I wouldn't have known where you were.

Complete: If I ___ (study) harder, I ___ (pass) the test.

  1. בפסוקית ה-if: had studied.
  2. בתוצאה: would have passed.

תשובה: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the test.

Express regret: I did not listen to my teacher, so I did not do well.

  1. הופכים את מה שקרה לתנאי הפוך: If I had listened to my teacher.
  2. התוצאה: I would have done better.

תשובה: If I had listened to my teacher, I would have done better.

Change the order: We would have caught the train if we had left earlier.
